Somatic Psychotherapy

How would it be for you to experience life with a strong sense of who you really are?

I can support you in making the changes you desire

Life can be complex and confusing

If your life feels meaningless and unfulfilled at times, you feel isolated and lonely, or you feel anxious, fearful and stressed, you need to understand that is not the natural order of things.

These challenging and confusing states are symptoms of losing connection with who you really are, of seeing only fault in yourself and failing to recognise your incredible inner spirit.

We present to the world a face we consider to be more acceptable to others. The sense of incongruence we feel creates fear of discovery, anxiety and stress.

The root of our problems stems from childhood and the way we handled the challenges life presented. The key to resolving those issues and to creating the life we want lies in healing the resulting wounds to our soul, in recognising and accepting who we really are.

I can help you feel self-acceptance and self-love

I can help you connect and have fulfilling relationships with others. You can discover a sense of purpose in your life and develop the confidence of knowing that you can create the life you want through self-awareness and self-acceptance.

Together we can help you achieve health and vitality, a sense of aliveness and passion for life, a sense of joy and peace. These are natural feelings you can wake up with every day.

Psychotherapy nurtures & heals

Psychotherapy – when it is true to its origins – is defined as “the art of nurturing and healing the soul”. Gerry O’Sullivan, a qualified and experienced Somatic Psychotherapist, can guide you to self-awareness, creating a safe and caring environment in which to examine and heal wounds that are manifesting themselves through crises or undesirable situations in your life today. Sensitive body work can help you to connect with and release trapped emotions.

The outcome of this process is self-awareness, self-acceptance and love, and a realisation of all the possibilities your life can hold. Self-acceptance and love allow you to connect with yourself and others, and to commit to live life as you really are.

What is Somatic Psychotherapy?

Somatic Psychotherapy provides a safe non-judgmental space and relationship in which to explore and develop awareness of the self. Emphasis is on the uniqueness of the individual, inclusive of body, mind and spirit, and the inherent movement of the human body-mind towards health and growth. Somatic Psychotherapy, whilst inclusive of “talking therapies” can also be informed by bodily experience and somatic techniques including the recognition of non-verbal signals and with permission, appropriate therapeutic touch.

Practitioners are experienced in the observation of breath, posture, energetic patterns of expansion and contraction and unconscious movements of the body – all of which convey information about the clients’ emotional state. By including these bodily experiences, greater awareness of both the conscious and unconscious patterns is gained.

Within the safe holding of the developing therapeutic relationship, clients are supported in increasing wellbeing by:

  • exploring, recognizing and understanding established patterns of responses, both conscious and unconscious, stemming from early childhood and/or more recent experiences
  • transformation of outdated, problematic patterns and integration of these changes
  • developing a stronger sense of self which provides a firm foundation for freedom and choice and the responsibility for such choices
  • establishing healthy satisfying relationships

It is within the therapeutic relationship, guided by the body’s innate capacity to heal itself and facilitated by the awareness, presence, holding and experience of the therapist, that perception of life is transformed.
